HARTSOCK: CONGRESSIONAL MEDIAL OF HONOR WINNERS
On Memorial Day Month, we recall 3 of our veterans who won the Congressional Medal of Honor in the 2nd World and Vietnam War. They were all inducted in Fairmont at the former Recruiting Station on Gaston Ave. 159 pictures and 81 video clips are used to tell the story. Quiet Dell resident Herschel “Woody” Williams is seen as he discusses his life and award at East Fairmont High School, on the History Channel, and on a special WV PBS program on “West Virginians at War.” Tom Bennett’s life is narrated by D.D. Meighen, who worked for seven years at the Bennett House, the ecumenical campus ministry center at West Virginia University named in his honor. Bennett was killed in Vietnam on Feb. 9, 1969 and was awarded posthumorously the Medal of Honor. He became only the second person EVER to receive this award as a conscientious objector. His objection to war was well stated, but his desire to serve his country led him to enlist as a medic. A dorm at WVU, a bridge leading into Morgantown, the campus ministry facility at WVU, and a youth center at a military base in Hawaii is named for him. The third inductee is Staff Sgt. Robert W. Hartsock of Cumberland, Maryland. He was killed in Vietnam Feb. 23, 1969. In addition, portions of a military funeral for Frank Fleming, Jr. at the Grafton National Cemetery, is viewed. A 1984 video of a slideshow done by children and youth at a summer camp studying peace and justice is also seen. A portion of a concert by Vocal Tapestry in 2009 featuring a salute to the various military branches is featured. Military pictures around Fairmont taken by Creed Holden are interspersed. Our thanks to West Virginia PBS “West Virginians At War” (shown in 1994), the Take a Veteran to School Video, and portions of the Vietnam War on You Tube for use in this documentary. A first Public Hearing was heard Wednesday, February 22, 2012, at 10:30 am, at the County Courthouse located at 200 Jackson Street, Room 403, Fairmont, WV, concerning intent to submit an application for Small Cities Block Grant funds to the West Virginia Development Office. Richard Walton spoke on behalf of Curtisville Lake for funds to build a new restroom facility that would compliment the work already there

Also, Dr. David Cyphress is interviewed; second, the “Stations of the Cross” at Gateway United Methodist Church is presented with Rev. Tim Conrad explaining some of them; and third, the Sunrise Service held at Woodlawn Cemetery is shown with Carolyn Kerr playing the keyboard, Rev. John Riley presiding, portions of two hymns being sung, and the sunrise ascending with birds playing in the trees. The scripture and meditation is wonderfully presented by Charles “Chuck” Shield, former Bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Also shown are two Easter Hymns presented by Vocal Tapestry: “Hymn of Promise” and “Joy in the Morning,” both written by Natalie Sleeth.
